Zermatt is full of history, but it’s also right at the forefront of new digital technology.

In a recent survey by Atos, Zermatt was ranked first in a ranking of Swiss and Austrian ski resorts, recognising the resorts as having ‘an excellent offering in all digital channels’.

Award-winning App
One of the key reasons for Zermatt’s success is the impressive ‘Zermatt Skiguide’ app, which acts as a digital companion for skiers and snowboarders.
The app won silver in the ‘Best of Swiss Apps Award’ in 2016 for User Experience and bronze medals in the Functionality and Design categories.
The ‘Zermatt Skiguide’ app has a wide number of features, beyond the basic levels that some resorts offer.
3D Views of Resort & Route Advice
The centrepiece of the app is the ability to navigate your way around resort on a 3D map that covers the entire international Matterhorn ski paradise, including Cervinia and Valtournenche.
The geo-referenced 3D map was produced using the skills of the Institute of Cartography and specialists Geoinformation from Zurich. It uses both Swiss and Italian elevation models and pulls in piste data in the form of CAD construction plans.
Users can orient themselves using GPS and then navigate from point to point, using the intuitive route finder.
This shows the user the best route to your chosen destination (e.g. a lift or mountain restaurant), as well as calculating how long it is likely to take based on the current open lifts and pistes and the user’s pre-entered skiing style.
“So that users do not lose their way, a Rail-Snap System was developed for the app. This makes it possible to work through the map with a single finger, which is a huge functionality advantage under the often very low temperatures,” said Sandra Stockinger from Zermatt Bergbahnen.
The app has also plenty of other features:
Live Lift & Piste Status
Users can stay up to date with the weather situation in resort, including the wind and avalanche situation and any unscheduled closures of lifts and pistes. You can also look up the latest images from the webcams to see today’s view from higher up before you’ve even left resort.
Mountain Restaurant Guide
The app contains a guide that lists all mountain restaurants, including the opening hours, descriptions and image galleries.
Book Passes Online
Why stand in a queue for to buy a lift ticket? The app saves you time and allows you to buy your tickets online.
This free app is available for download for iOS and Android devices.
