Zermatt has confirmed the safety measures that will be in place this winter to ensure the safety of visitors.
In a press conference, the resort revealed that all lifts and pistes will be open this winter.
Zermatt Opening Date – 28 November 2020
Although skiing is already possible on the 21km of pistes on the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, the rest of the resort will follow from 28 November.
Watch out for the new Kumme gondola which will start operating on 20 December.
Safety is the priority
Masks will not have to be worn while skiing, but will be compulsory in gondolas, cable cars and in buses around resort.
Zermatt Director of Tourism, Daniel Luggen spoke about how après ski will look this season:
“Obviously, après ski is very much part of the skiing experience, but it’s secondary for Zermatt. Our guests particularly value the skiing, the fantastic gastronomy and the opportunity to enjoy the natural world.”
Summer showed that visitors to the resort are excellent at complying with official restrictions. Zermatt will follow all resort federal and cantonal measures.
Note that buffs are not considered adequate as a face covering and authorised face masks must be worn. Fabric facemasks are widely available from around CHF10.
In the event of testing positive for COVID or having to quarantine, tickets can be converted into a credit note.
Zermatt Unplugged in 2021
Zermatt Unplugged 2021 cannot take place in its usual format, so on two weekends in spring (08-10 April and 15-17 April 2021), the Zermatt Unplugged festival will put on intimate concerts in spectacular locations.
“There will still be concerts in Zermatt in 2021, with spectacular backdrops, under the Matterhorn sun, on the mountains and in the valley,” says Managing Director Rolf Furrer.
New investments in Zermatt
Zermatt continues to invest in improving the already-impressive lift system:

- The Testa Grigia-Klein Matterhorn 3S cable car is currently under construction
- Zermatt and Cervinia are planning a World Cup downhill race from Gobba di Rollin to Laghi Cime Bianche
