Zermatt Opening Dates & Safety Measures for Winter 2021/22 (Updated 30 November)

Zermatt regularly updates the safety measures and opening dates for this summer and winter to ensure the safety of visitors.

Zermatt is currently open for skiing, as it has been non-stop since summer 2020.

Zermatt Winter Opening Date – 27 November 2021

Although skiing continued on the 21km of pistes on the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise through autumn 2021, the rest of the ski area opened for skiing on 27 November 2021.

The link with Cervinia officially opened on 23 October. Please note that the Covid regulations in Italy are different from Switzerland.

You can view the full lift opening schedule here.

Race teams from around the world have been training on the Zermatt glacier to prepare for this winter’s race circuit:

Safety is the priority

Masks do not have to be worn while skiing, but are still compulsory in gondolas, cable cars and in buses around resort.

Zermatt Director of Tourism, Daniel Luggen spoke about how après ski looked this season just gone:

“Obviously, après ski is very much part of the skiing experience, but it’s secondary for Zermatt. Our guests particularly value the skiing, the fantastic gastronomy and the opportunity to enjoy the natural world.”

Winter 2021 (when our lifts remained open) and summer 2021 has showed that visitors to the resort are excellent at complying with official restrictions. Zermatt will continue to follow all resort federal and cantonal measures.

Covid certificates need to be shown for access to restaurants and other indoor venues from Monday 13 September onwards. You can find out more about how to get a Swiss Covid certificate here.

Please note that certificates generated via the NHS app are acceptable for guests from the UK.

Zermatt-designed face masks

Note that buffs are not considered adequate as a face covering. Zermatt has produced its own range of face masks and helmet-specific masks for skiing:
