Zermatt Investing Over 1 Billion Swiss Francs

Did you know that Zermatt is in the middle of a CHF 1.1 billion investment into the resort’s infrastructure, new tourist events, new or renovated lifts, hotels and restaurants?

This project has been running since 2013 and is a key part of the resort’s plans to be ensure that they play an important in Alpine tourism in the future.

CHF431 million spent already

Within the past four years projects costing a total of CHF 431m have been completed already, including the new Hirli chairlift in Schwarzee, the Furggsattel Express on the glacier, and the resort’s new avalanche detection system.

How will the money be spent?

The breakdown of the total 1.1 billion Swiss Francs was planned to be spent as follows:

  • CHF 420m in new and replacement lifts
  • CHF 300m in lodging renovations and the construction of new hotels and apartments
  • CHF 200m in improving access to Zermatt from Täsch
  • CHF 100m in snowmaking, piste improvements & activities like sledging, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing
  • CHF 40m in summer activities, such as hiking trails, MTB routes, and an improved golf course
  • CHF 50m in other indoor and outdoor sports facilities
  • CHF 50m in security and safety precautions including the protection of the infrastructure and tourists from natural dangers
  • CHF 50m on marketing the resort to new countries

 

The financing for this whole project is supported by a mix of public sources, such as the local council, the Valais canton and Zermatt Tourism) and private service providers (including the resort’s lifts, railways, hotels and other service providers).
