Plans to link Zermatt to the huge Aosta Valley ski area are moving forward.
Third largest ski area in the world
The new lifts would connect the Monterosa Ski region (the resorts of Gressoney, Alagna, Ayas and Valtournache) with Cervinia – which is already connected to Zermatt – creating a huge ski area of around 530km of marked pistes.
This would form the third largest ski area in the world and is estimated to cost around 65 million euros.
It will involve the development of a new 8km lift system using a 3S cable car, which can carry up to 30 people in each gondola.
In development since 2013
The ‘Alplinks’ project has been in development since 2013 and requires the agreement of several resorts and towns.
The main objection has been the impact on the environment. Ironically one of the arguments in favour of the link is that it would join the Monterosa area to the snow-sure resort of Cervinia, which has the height and aspect to retain snow despite an increasing global temperature.
We’ll keep following this project closely and will keep you up to date on any new developments.
