Skiers and snowboarders need to watch out for new Swiss car hire rules that prevent you taking your car to another country.

From this month onwards, if you are flying into Geneva and planning to drive to a French ski resort, or flying into Zurich and driving to Austria you need to be aware that a Swiss-registered hire car cannot be driven across the border by an EU citizen.

A ‘ridiculous’ ruling

This bizarre ruling has caused uproar among ski hire companies, one of whom has described the change ‘ridiculous’.

According to ‘The Guardian‘ a European commission spokeswoman said that EU citizens should try to inform the car rental company in advance if they intend to drive into the EU.”
