Why the Wolli Park in Zermatt is great for children…

The Wolli Park in Zermatt is just one of the features of a ski resort with safe kids ski areas, plenty of family entertainment and world-class skiing.

Zermatt is often associated with mountaineering, off-piste skiing and luxury holidays. It is often overlooked when skiers are choosing a resort for a family ski holiday, but it certainly shouldn’t be!

Our post ‘8 Great Reasons to bring the kids to Zermatt‘ includes more reasons to make Zermatt your family ski holiday destination, but the Wolli Park in Zermatt is special…

Kids ski free in Zermatt

In Zermatt, anyone under the age of 9 can ski for free, whereas most French ski resorts only offer a free pass to children under the age of 5.

Children aged between 9 and 16 years qualify for a 50% reduction on the lift pass price and there is a also a Youth pass that entitles under 20’s to a 15% discount.

In many other ski resorts, a child will only receive a 20% reduction up to the age of 13.

The Wolli Park in Zermatt is perfect for children

The Wolli Park is located in the Sunnegga area of Zermatt and is accessed by the funicular in the centre of the town, which operates from 8.30am to 5.30pm. A funicular is a very simple way of travelling and your children don’t have to worry about button or chairlifts to get to the slopes.

The Wolli Park is situated in a sheltered spot on the mountain away from any busy pistes. It’s also a spot with the bonus of amazing views of the Matterhorn.

You can ski to the Wolli Park via an easy blue run or by taking the Leisee Shuttle mini funicular. This also means you can use the area and take the lift back down again, without the need to ski down to resort – extra useful in those early days of skiing.

360 view of the Wolli Park

Take a look around this 360 degree view of the Wolli Park on our Facebook page. Simply drag your mouse or swipe to change the view.

You’ll see the mini-funicular taking you down to the park, plus the magic carpets and gentle slopes your children (and indeed beginners of any age!) will use when they learn to ski.

Ski School Meeting Point

The park is used by many of the local ski schools. You might even find that this is the meeting point for your children’s ski lesson.

The runs in the park are served by five magic carpet lifts, which helps to keep the queues down and provides a safe way for children to access the runs.

There are loads of activities in the park to keep the children entertained too. There are hooped slaloms, roller sea-saws and you may even get a visit from Wolli the skiing sheep.

Close to restaurants

The Wolli Park in Zermatt is located on the edge of a lake which is a popular destination for walkers in the summer and adds to the dramatic feel of the area. Located at the far side of the park and close to the lake you will find a fort-like play park.

If you are wondering about lunch you will find four restaurants in the surrounding area, including the Sunegga Buffet Bar, Restaurant Paradies and the Adler-Hitta. There is also a covered picnic area.

The blue piste that serves the Wolli Park is called the Slow Slope and is a great run when you are ready to take the kids that step further.

Skiers are encouraged to take a slow pace on this run to make sure it is a haven for family skiing and beginners.
