Five years ago Ed and Suzanne Mannix set up Matterhorn Chalets – the Zermatt specialist ski company – but the roots of their business can be dated back to when they first met in Courmayeur in 1981.

At the time Ed was working as overseas manager for Ski West, while Suzanne was PA to Mark Lines, one of the founders of Bladon Lines.

Ed went on to work for Bladon Lines after they acquired Ski West before setting up his own tax consultancy business in 1993. He has worked with almost every British chalet company at some point and has become the go-to specialist in this complex area of French law.

Mutual love of Zermatt

Suzanne worked ski seasons in Meribel and Zermatt and also lived in New Zealand, but the two of them kept in contact and ultimately married in 2014.

It was their mutual love of Zermatt that led them to set up Matterhorn Chalets.  They had been travelling to the resort for off-piste and heli-skiing trip on an annual basis, and wanted to share their expertise and knowledge:

‘Everyone should see the Matterhorn at least once in their lives – it’s the equivalent of going to Venice or seeing the pyramids,’ said Ed.

“Zermatt is a unique and magical place,” according to Ed.

“It may be expensive but the quality of the holiday experience is incomparably higher than in other Alpine resorts, especially in France, where in some places it is just as expensive (such as Courchevel 1850) but with mean-spirited service.”
