Breeding the domestic Blacknose sheep is an integral part of tradition in Zermatt.
They have been part of life in Zermatt well before skiing was thought of, and even today many guests will be closer to the sheep than they imagine as many chalets and hotels use pillows and under blankets made from this special sheep’s wool.

Visit the Zermatt’s Blacknose Sheep
The great news is that it’s possible to visit and pet these Blacknose sheep in winter in their barn on the edge of the village.
With its herd of 300 animals, the Julen family – one of Zermatt’s oldest families – has the world’s largest flock of these charming sheep.
How to book
The 90-minute visit is available on Wednesdays for guests who pre-book with Zermatt tourist office.and costs CHF20.

Learn the history of Zermatt’s farms
You will be picked up at the Romantik Hotel Julen at 5.30pm and taken by electric taxi to the farm, where you will be greeted by a member of the Julen family.
They will take you through the history of the farm, and explain the growth and links with tourism over the years, as well as talking you through their bio-gas plant.
There will of course be the opportunity to visit and pet the sheep and other animals and take pictures.
Test local produce
That’s followed by an ‘Apero’ – the chance to taste some of the food produced on the farm such as cheese, dried meat and sausage – before taking your electric taxi back to town.
