Zermatt Lockdown Latest (19 May 2020)

We are delighted to be able to report from Zermatt about the new-found freedoms in Switzerland, as the country emerges from lockdown.

What’s open and allowed right now

Currently in Zermatt, since 13 May, all the following are allowed to be open or practiced:

  • Hotels
  • Holiday flats
  • Public transport
  • Hiking trails
  • Bike tours
  • Restaurants and bars
  • Shops
  • Museums
  • Tourist offices
  • Sports with no physical contact, in groups of up to five (eg mountain guide tours or yoga)
  • Sports facilities of allowed sports (eg tennis courts or golf courses)
  • Childcare institutions
  • Helicopter flights

Lifts likely to start from 08 June

If Switzerland continues to recover from Covid-19 as expected, then from 08 June, the following are all expected to open:

  • Mountain railways
  • Cinemas
  • Swimming pools
  • Campsites

In Zermatt, that means the lifts will start turning again, including the Gornergrat railway and the 3S Matterhorn Glacier Ride cable car.

We hope skiing will start as well

We expect that the mean that the Glacier Mountain Paradise ski area will open at the same time!

Not that you need lifts to ski…Ed from Matterhorn Chalets has been keeping fit throughout by continuing with ski touring, even though there isn’t much snow left!
