Zermatt Beer: All You Need To Know

Zermatt is famous for its skiing and hiking, the Matterhorn and marmots, but increasingly it’s well known for its beer as well.

Tourists are welcome to visit the new tasting and event room at the Zermatt Matterhorn Brewery. Available for both private events and brewery tours, it’s the ideal location for a celebratory drink with friends or a company outing.

Two main Zermatt beers

The brewery produces over 1000 ‘hectolitres’ (a metric unit of capacity equal to one hundred litres) of beer every year.

The ‘Matterhorn Special’ is an earthy special beer with a hint of honey. The ‘Monte Rosa’ is a light lager, “rather hoppy, with floral and herbal flavours” according to David Maier, the company’s senior ‘brewmaster’.

Both beers are untreated, naturally cloudy and unpasteurised.

New Alcohol-Free beer

The two key bottled lines were joined by ‘Zermatt Limo’ – a malt-based non-alcoholic beer with very little sugar.

“In producing this alcohol-free beer, we wanted to establish a second pillar for our business.”

It’s tough to stand out against the dominant brands such as Heineken, but there’s a clue in the name to why the Zermatt Matterhorn Brewery’s products stand out.

“The label pictures a world-famous mountain and the water used to make the beer comes from the mountains and springs around Zermatt,” confirmed Maier.
