In Tripadvisor’s annual Traveller’s Choice Awards, Zermatt regularly picks up the award for the “Best Destination for Skiers in the World”
Europe’s Only All-Year-Round Resort
Some ski resorts open early; some close late, but there’s only one ski resort that’s open 365 days per year – Zermatt. The ski area on the Theodul Glacier is open all year round, with 21km of pistes open in the summer months.
Europe’s Highest Ski Lift
The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise 3S lift is the highest lift in Europe, taking you up to 3883m above sea level at Klein Matterhorn. From here you can go straight onto the pistes.
Europe’s Longest Piste
Not only does Zermatt offer the highest lift-served piste skiing in Europe, but it’s possible to ski a full 25km from the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise all the way to the village – a massive vertical drop of 2275m.
Europe’s Highest Outdoor Rack Railway
If you’ve never experienced the Gornergrat Bahn, then it should be on your bucket list. The world’s first fully electrified cog railway lifts passengers from resort to Gornergrat (3089m), taking 33 minutes to complete the 9.4km journey.
Switzerland’s Best Mountain Restaurant
The Zermatt mountain restaurant Chez Vrony regularly takes first place in Switzerland in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards.
Switzerland’s Sunniest Area
Meteo Schweiz has rated Zermatt, Täsch and Randa is the sunniest corner of Switzerland with an average sunshine duration of 62%, above Ticino (55%) and Engadine (56%).
Switzerland’s First Operator-free Gondola
The Kumme gondola, which opened in December 2020, became the first lift in Switzerland to operate without staff.
Europe’s Highest Toboggan Run
The Rotenboden toboggan run on the Gornergrat is the highest – and one of the most beautiful – settings for sledging in the world. The run takes 10 minutes with a vertical drop of 233m.
