It might be freezing cold outside, but you’ll be snug and warm inside the cab of one of Zermatt’s powerful 490hp snow groomers.

That is an experience that you can try for yourself in Zermatt this winter as you join the driver and prepare the pistes for the next day’s skiing.

Drive in a ‘piste basher’

Zermatt’s ‘piste bashers’ (as they are known colloquially in the UK) drive the resort’s slopes as soon as the pistes close until midnight.

Different sectors of the ski area are on offer on different days of the week. On Tuesdays, it’s the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise sector; Wednesdays it’s Rothorn; and on Thursday it’s the Gornergrat sector.

You can join a driver for your own four-hour sessions from 4pm to 8pm. Sessions are available from Tuesday through Thursday every week through to the end of April.

The Zermatt snow groomer experience costs CHF150. You’ll also need a valid lift pass to get to the meeting point.
