This winter you can travel back in time when taking the Gornergrat railway. You can’t quite go as far back as 1898, when this famous cog railway first opened. However, you can experience the same luxury adventure that visitors in the 1960s enjoyed.

That’s because a new ‘nostalgic’ carriage has been beautifully renovated to the same style of the time.

Restored to a fine level of detail

The ‘BHE 2/4 No.2031’ carriage first operated in 1961 and has now been lovingly restored to a fine level of detail. White curtains separate the compartments, while an antique telephone and vintage suitcase are reminiscent of bygone times.

An insight into the history of Zermatt

Your day will start with a welcome drink at the Tannenhof Hotel, before your guide leads you through streets of Zermatt sharing the history [in English and German] of this 125-year-old railway.

Every tailored and comfortable seat offers window views and you’ll learn more about the history of Zermatt on the ascent to Gornergrat at 3089m.

Here you’ll not only be able to enjoy the magnificent views, but also discover one of the three original locomotives – the ‘Golden Spot’ – now extensively restored and gold-plated.

After a four-course lunch, there’s time to explore the summit before returning to the village after an extremely special and unique day on Zermatt’s mountains.
