At around 4pm each day, for the last 22 years, Romy Anthamatten starts his shift in one of Zermatt’s snow groomers.
As befits someone with so much experience, one of Anthamatten’s highly skilled tasks is grooming the extremely steep Howete piste.

One of the most powerful snow groomers on the market
The 62-year-old drives one of the most powerful snow groomers on the market. “It’s a real beast,” he says. At 13 tonnes and 520 horsepower it delivers the kind of power needed for this job.
Before starting on Howete, he puts up a warning sign for any late ski tourers who might still be on the hill.

“The slope is brutal”
The slope is 100 metres long with a gradient of 40 per cent. That is so steep that it requires a cable and winch to groom it.
“The slope is brutal. You have to be patient,” he says.

As well as Howete, he covers 40 kilometres during his time on the mountain, pushing snow back and forth to create the perfect piste for skiers and snowboarders:
“I enjoy the isolation when I’m working after the slopes have closed. I know every slope and love the stunning sunsets.”
