From June to August 2025, Europe’s highest open-air stage will once again come alive as the venue for ‘The Matterhorn Story’, performed in front of the iconic Matterhorn in Zermatt.
A decade after its premiere, this historic drama returns to mark the 160th anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn.
Performances will take place at 2582m at Riffelberg – an unforgettable setting!

A Fresh Take with Live Piano Accompaniment
In this new adaptation, Bernese writer and director Livia Anne Richard delves deeper into the untold stories of the true heroes behind the historic climb, including those who were overlooked, or even blamed, at the time.
First performed in 2015 for the 150th anniversary, at the time the play opened to widespread acclaim for its powerful storytelling and historical authenticity.
For the 2025 revival, Richard has reimagined the piece while staying true to its essence. New characters will be introduced, along with a moving musical component created by the Zermatt-based band Wintershome and Bernese pianist Elia Gasser, who will provide live accompaniment each evening.
Local Talent Brings History to Life
The production features a cast of 29 performers, most of whom are from Zermatt or the local Valais region.
For actors David Taugwalder and Pino Mazzone, their roles hold personal significance as both are direct descendants of characters they portray, revisiting a family history tied to the tragedy of the first ascent.
Taugwalder’s father was accused by Edward Whymper, the famed British mountaineer who first summited the Matterhorn, of causing the accident that claimed four lives.

An Intimate Theatre Experience in the Alps
The premiere is set for Friday 27 June 2025, followed by 31 performances through to 23 August.
With just 448 seats, the open-air venue offers a close and immersive experience, bringing audiences face-to-face with history, drama, and the raw beauty of the Alps.
