Cervinia to open ‘Cervino – The One’ lift to improve connection to Zermatt

The Italian resort of Cervinia has announced that they will upgrade their connection to Zermatt with a new lift called ‘Cervino – The One’.

Since the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing opened in July 2023, seamlessly connecting Zermatt in Switzerland and Cervinia in Italy, it’s been possible to take a lift between the two resorts and the two countries, without even setting foot on the ground.

Zermatt’s impressive lift system

However, until now the lifts on the Cervinia side have not matched the impressive technology of Zermatt’s 3S Matterhorn Glacier Ride lift.

Italian lift company Cervino SpA has unveiled its €200 million ‘Cervino – The One’ project to replace the old three-stage journey with two new Leitner 3S gondolas.

This will reduce the travel time to the top to around 20 minutes and increase capacity from 1250 to 3000 passengers per hour.

Lift will operate in high winds

Currently, skiers and snowboarders have to navigate a chain of lifts, starting with a six-person gondola or 85-person cable car from Breuil-Cervinia (2050m) to Plan Maison (2550m), then a 12-seater gondola to Cime Bianche Laghi (2814m), followed by a large 125-person cable car to Plateau Rosà (3480m)

A limiter with this system is that high winds can close these lifts. However, ‘Cervino – The One’ will be a continuous two-stage lift—starting at Breuil-Cervinia and ending at Plateau Rosà – that will operate even in high winds.

Construction is expected to start in spring 2026 and for the lift to be fully open by 2030.

Zermatt > Cervinia

The main advantage will be that skiers can enjoy the superior slopes and ski area in Zermatt, compared with Cervinia.

Personally, we can’t see why anyone would want to stay in Cervinia, when you could stay in Zermatt and ski on the Swiss slopes from the start of the day!

Plus you get a vastly superior view of the Matterhorn, which simply doesn’t look as good when viewed from the Italian side.
