Zermatt is constantly investing in new lifts, with the latest being an upgrade on the Gifthittli chairlift.
As previous visitors to Zermatt will know, one of the few bottlenecks in the whole ski area has been the Gifthittli, which gives access to the Sunnegga sector from Riffelberg.
The occasional queues should now be a thing of the past as Zermatt’s ski lift company is replacing the old six-person lift, introduced in 2033, with one of the first eight-seater detachable chairlifts in Switzerland.
Heated seats and covers
The new Leitner designed lift includes weather protection covers that fold down and keep you out of high winds and snow and heated seats. The uplift capacity will increase to 3,200 skiers and snowboarders per hour and will take around five minutes and 40 seconds.
The existing installation is being dismantled and will be rebuilt in another European ski resort. The new lift is scheduled to open at the start of the coming 2025/26 winter season.
