Zermatt goes fully digital with new Smartphone Ticket

Zermatt’s lift company, Zermatt Bergbahnen, has introduced a new smartphone-based ticket system. It means Zermatt becomes the first destination in Switzerland to replace the traditional physical lift pass.

The new ‘Smartphone Ticket’ lets visitors buy their pass online or on-site in resort, then store it directly in the resort’s free Matterhorn App.

Bluetooth connection to access gates

On the day of use, the ticket is activated via the app and communicates via Bluetooth with the resort’s new access gates, allowing entry without even taking your phone out of your pocket.

A big advantage of the new system is that it also works offline, without mobile data or an internet connection – all you need is Bluetooth and GPS.

If you’re worried about power, according to Zermatt Bergbahnen a typical smartphone will only experience a 10% additional drain on the battery each day.

The upgraded system uses access control readers from SKIDATA, all of which were installed in November 2024.

If you do already have an existing physical Zermatt lift ticket, they can be exchanged free of charge and loaded onto the smartphone version.
