Find out why Zermatt is good for beginners and an ideal place to learn to ski.
For first time and beginner skiers and boarders Zermatt is an inspiring place to start your skiing adventure in a traditional resort, but one that that is enhanced by modern facilities.
The last few years have seen some heavy investment in new lifts. The resort has worked hard to improve the experience for beginners in Zermatt, including improved learner zones and lift access.
Fall in love with skiing
Zermatt offers those new to skiing the chance to fall in love with the sport and the whole experience of being in the mountains.
This Swiss resort offers it all: dramatic scenery, luxury catered chalets, an historic town, incredible eateries and plenty of other activities to keep everyone occupied. This alone is enough to make you want to return every year.
Value Lift Passes for beginners
A standard Zermatt lift pass for 6 days costs CHF380 (about £300). That’s comparable to most Swiss resorts, although in Zermatt you get a lot of skiing for your money.
However, unlike many resorts there is a cheaper option for beginners who will probably only use a small area and the beginner slopes in their first week of skiing.
Zermatt offers a lift ticket for only CHF253 specific for novice skiers. This covers the Sunnegga area, which is perfect for developing your skills.
Discounted and free lift passes for children
If you have a family who are starting to ski there is even more reason to start them off skiing in Zermatt.
Under 9’s are entitled to a free lift pass and children aged between 9-16 save 50% off the price of an adult pass.
An excellent ski area for beginners
The whole Zermatt ski area is huge, but beginners are well catered for. The best skiing for beginners is located up the on the mountain.
There are three main ‘Learning Zones’ serviced by lifts or funiculars that open earlier than the rest of the ski area to ensure you can be on time for a ski lesson that starts at 9am. Most ‘Learning Zones’ have a nearby ‘slow piste’ as well as family friendly restaurants.
Which areas in Zermatt are best for beginners?
The main ski school meeting points and learning zones are at the Blauherd, Gornergrat, Tockner and Sunnegga areas.
The most popular spot to learn to ski is the Sunnegga area. It is home to ‘Wolli’s Park’ which is where many of the ski schools host their lessons after meeting at the top of funicular.
The ‘Wolli’s Park’ has benefited the most from recent investment and boasts a nursery, play zones and four magic carpets. It also benefits from being in the discounted beginner ski pass area.
As all the beginner zones are located up the mountain it is much easier for more experienced riders to meet up with their beginner friends. This also applies to parents wishing to drop in and see how their offspring are getting on.
Zermatt is home to some of the best ski schools and instructors in the world. It covers options from the oldest ski school that traces its history back to the origins of the resort to the first British ski school to open its doors in Zermatt.
The Matterhorn Chalets team can help you find the right instructor and ski school for you, based on your language, nationality and budget, as part of our inclusive concierge service.
