What is the best way to get from Geneva Airport to Zermatt?

There are four main ways of travelling from Geneva airport to Zermatt. In this post from Zermatt specialists Matterhorn Chalets, we look at the details and costs of each option, as well as other important elements of your journey:

Flying into Geneva

Geneva airport is linked to a dozen UK airports by direct flights with times ranging from 1h30m to 2h15m.

Flights depart from London, Aberdeen, Birmingham, Belfast, Edinburgh, Manchester, Bristol, Glasgow, Leeds, Newcastle, Nottingham, and Liverpool. The leading carriers running scheduled flights are Swiss, Jet2, EasyJet and British Airways.

Train

Getting from the airport to resort can be a source of holiday anxiety, but the good news is that Switzerland’s public transport system is ranked in the Top 5 worldwide.

The rail station is located in the airport and trains leave exactly on time. Simply turn left out of arrivals and it’s a five minute walk to the train station.

If you’ve bought your ticket in advance, you can walk straight onto the platform. If not, there are many ticket machines that are all easy to use, with instructions in multiple languages.

A train transfer will take around 4 hours with prices starting at CHF75.

Trains depart every hour to Visp where you will need to change to a Zermatt-bound train on the Matterhorn Gotthard line.

Taxi

There is a good selection of private taxi companies that will drive you from Geneva to Zermatt.  A single car can cost as much as CHF900, although depending on the time you travel and the number of people travelling the cost can be as low as CHF30 per person.

Most companies will only be able to take you as far as Täsch (see below). There are a few authorized taxi companies, like the two detailed below, which have permission to drive past the carpark in Täsch and deliver you as far as the edge of the actual village of Zermatt, from where you can take an electric taxi to your accommodation.

Drive

Geneva Airport is home to most of the major car hire companies. We recommend you shop around when booking as each company has special offers throughout the year. Holiday Autos is a easy-to-use site that delivers quick results.

Once you are on the road, the 230km journey will take you along the north side of Lake Geneva and into the mountains in around three hours.

On arrival, drivers will have to park in one of the 3000 spaces in Täsch, which is about 5km from Zermatt. The cost of parking in Täsch is CHF15.15 per day.

How to get from Täsch to Zermatt

If you travel by car or most taxi companies, you will need to change at Täsch. This is because Zermatt is car-free and for most travellers, the road ends at Täsch.

Although there is a road connecting Täsch to Zermatt, use is restricted and almost all visitors arrive via the short train journey.

The train to Zermatt runs 24 hours a day with departures every 20 minutes. It takes just 12 minutes from to travel between Täsch and Zermatt. Prices are CHF 16.40 return for adults and half-price for children.

Helicopter

The fastest way to get from Geneva airport to Zermatt is to fly directly from the airport with Air Zermatt by helicopter.

A chopper ride direct into resort takes about 45 minutes and costs CHF5000 for a single journey for up to five people.

Arriving in Zermatt

The town of Zermatt is car-free, so on arrival in the resort, unless you only have a small amount of luggage and are staying close to the train station then you’ll want to take an electric taxi or bus for the final part of your journey.

There is a fleet of electric resort buses that circulate the town covering the main areas and linking to the ski lifts.

Electric taxis operate throughout the resort to help you get around. We recommend Christophe Taxis, and you may want to book ahead if arriving at peak times.
