7 New Things To Watch Out For in Zermatt in 2016/17

For all its history, Zermatt is not a resort that stands still. This is a town that is constantly upgrading and improving, meaning that you can be sure that any ski holiday here will deliver.

The Matterhorn Chalets team have been keeping a close eye on changes over the summer. Here are our top seven new things to watch out in Zermatt this winter:

1. The new Gant Blauherd chairlift will open

Regular visitors to the Matterhorn Chalets will know, we’ve been excited about the new Gant lift for some time. We posted some photos of the progress in the summer, but the good news is that the six-seater chairlift will be operational for this winter.

The lift will carry 1800 skier and snowboarders an hour and take just 3 minutes and 30 seconds – this is much faster than the old lift and will alleviate the queues that sometimes formed in peak season.

2. New Flights into Sion

This winter Swiss will be offering flights direct from London to Sion – the closest airport to Zermatt. The flights will be during the peak ‘half term’ season, on four different dates – 4th/11th/18th/25th February. There are just 100 seats available on each flight, so don’t delay.

You can also cut your transfer time by booking a helicopter transfer from Sion direct into Zermatt. Our concierge service can book this for you.

3. Zermatt Fashion Show

Zermatt is always fashionable, but from 15-18 December the village is transformed again into a fashion hotspot. Catwalks take place across the resort during Zermatt Fashion Week, with a mix of exciting young designers on display.

4. “Vultures, vultures everywhere!”

You might recognise this quote from ‘Casablanca‘, but we bet you didn’t know a pair of bearded vultures have recently settled in Zermatt.  Watch out for them and their fledgling flying in the Riffelhorn area this winter. The birds have a wingspan of 2.6m so they should be easy to spot!

5. The Homemade Cafe

New in town is the Homemade Cafe, run by locals Doris Schwegler and Michelle Wimmersberger. Not far from the post office, you can buy tasty jams, cakes, snakes and smoothies.  Looks tasty!

6. View the new 3S Cable Car in Virtual Reality

Although the new 3S cable car won’t be opening until the 2018/19 ski season, you can try out the lift now using virtual reality.

The completed lift will connect Trockner Steg and the Matterhorn Paradise glacier at 3883m and it will become the highest 3S bahn in the world.
