Zermatt Opening Dates & Safety Measures for Summer 2021 & Winter 2021/22 (Updated 25 June)

Zermatt regularly updates the safety measures and opening dates for this summer and winter to ensure the safety of visitors.

Zermatt is currently open for skiing, as it has been non-stop since summer 2020.

Zermatt Winter Opening Date – 04 December 2021

Although skiing will continue on the 21km of pistes on the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise through summer 2021, the rest of the resort will open in full on 04 December 2021.

Safety is the priority

Masks do not have to be worn while skiing, but are still compulsory in gondolas, cable cars and in buses around resort.

Zermatt Director of Tourism, Daniel Luggen spoke about how après ski looked this season just gone:

“Obviously, après ski is very much part of the skiing experience, but it’s secondary for Zermatt. Our guests particularly value the skiing, the fantastic gastronomy and the opportunity to enjoy the natural world.”

Summer 2020 showed that visitors to the resort are excellent at complying with official restrictions. Zermatt will continue to follow all resort federal and cantonal measures.

Covid tests in Zermatt

It is possible to get a Covid test while you are in Zermatt if you feel symptoms, or need a negative test prior to travelling to another country.

Tests are available from all the resort’s medical centres. Rapid test results can be returned within 15 minutes and PCR tests within 48 hours, with certificates available in either English or German.

Rapid tests cost CHF90 (CHF80 for Swiss residents) or CHF180 for the PCR test (CHF156 for Swiss residents).

Current Restrictions

Since April 2021 restaurants, cafes, sports centres and cinemas in Zermatt have been open for dining outside on the many terraces available. In May, indoor dining was allowed again.

The great news is that from June 26, even more restrictions will be lifted:

The reopening steps introduced on 19 April and 31 May have not had a negative impact on the development of COVID-19 in Switzerland. Case numbers and hospital admissions…are continuing to fall sharply. In addition, around half of the adult population will be fully vaccinated by the end of June.

Federal Office of Public Health

Restaurants and large events will have no limits on numbers from 26 June. Guests in restaurants have to remain seated and socially distanced from other groups. As in the UK, masks must be worn until seated. Clubs and discos can open to those with a valid Covid certificate only.

There are no limits on the number of skiers allowed on the slopes. However, gondolas and cable cars are limited to 2/3 of total capacity. Masks are required in all public areas, on all lifts, public transport and queues.

International Entry Requirements

The great news is that from 26 June, entrants from the UK and USA (as well as most other countries) will no longer have to quarantine on arrival in Switzerland if they have been fully vaccinated.

Otherwise a negative test and quarantine for 10 days is required from most countries. Check the full latest list here.

A negative PCR test taken with the 72 hours before arrival are also required in some circumstances. Fully vaccinated people do not need to quarantine.

The situation is evolving the whole time, so please do check the latest situation before travel.

Zermatt-designed face masks

Note that buffs are not considered adequate as a face covering. Zermatt has produced its own range of face masks and helmet-specific masks for skiing:

In the event of testing positive for COVID or having to quarantine, tickets can be converted into a credit note.

Zermatt Unplugged in 2022

Zermatt Unplugged 2021 took place virtually in 2021 and will be back from 05-10 April 2022.

“There will still be concerts in Zermatt in 2021, with spectacular backdrops, under the Matterhorn sun, on the mountains and in the valley,” says Managing Director Rolf Furrer.
